We all know things like sugar and heavily processed foods aren’t great for us.
They’re linked to weight gain and general health issues, that part isn’t news.
But what really changed my mindset was learning the specific reasons these foods speed up aging, especially at the cellular level.
I’m not trying to be dramatic here. I still enjoy a sweet treat every now and then.
But understanding what these ingredients actually do has made it much easier to cut back, without feeling restricted.
Refined Sugar
I used to think sugar was just “empty calories.” Maybe it made you gain weight or crash after eating, but that was about it.
Then I learned about Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs).
When you eat too much sugar, it binds to proteins in your body and forms these compounds.
AGEs damage collagen, increase inflammation, and speed up the aging process, inside and out.
This study explains how AGEs contribute to oxidative stress and are linked to heart disease, diabetes, and faster cellular aging.
Ultra-Processed Foods
Think of ultra-processed foods as anything with a long list of unfamiliar ingredients, like most cereals, packaged snacks, fast food, or frozen meals.
They’re often loaded with added sugar, refined oils, additives, and salt, things that disrupt metabolism, spike inflammation, and make it harder for your body to function optimally.
This study found that a higher intake of ultra-processed foods was associated with biological aging markers, things like shorter telomeres and increased chronic disease risk.
I still eat convenience foods sometimes, but I try to avoid the ultra-processed stuff that doesn’t really nourish anything.
Swapping in whole, simple foods where I can just makes me feel better, physically and mentally.
I’m not aiming for perfection. Just a little more awareness and a little less autopilot.
And honestly, that shift alone has made a difference.
Have a great rest of your weekend!
