Microplastics are literally everywhere, I mean EVERYWHERE.
They’re in our water, soil and air.
The ocean is full of them.
Take the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, for example, it’s a plastic island the size of Texas, floating between Japan and North America.
Micro and nanoplastics can also be found throughout your body. You’re probably ingesting and absorbing a good amount every day.
Once they’re in you body they suppress your immune system and trigger inflammation. They can even contribute to leaky gut, which causes even more inflammation.
Eventually, this leads to chronic and systemic inflammation, which is associated with nearly every chronic disease.
One microplastic-related chemical is called BPA (Bisphenol A). It’s one of the most common, and most dangerous.
BPA is known to:
- Act as a hormone disruptor.
- Change how your genes are expressed, which can increase the risk of cancer, infertility, metabolic disorders, and more.
- Disrupt insulin resistance, increasing the risk of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.
I could go on and on about the negative effects of microplastics, but I think you get the point. They’re bad… really bad
So what can we do about it?
There are two main things: reduce your exposure and help your body detox.
How to reduce exposure
To reduce your exposure, try to use fewer plastic products:
- Plastic containers → Switch to glass or stainless steel
- Canned foods → Choose BPA-free cans or fresh options
- Plastic water bottles → Use a reusable metal bottle
- Receipts → Avoid touching them
- Non-stick pans, synthetic clothes, microwave meals → Avoid as much as possible
- Indoor air → Use a HEPA filter
Especially avoid plastic items that are warm or were heated at any point.
A plastic bottle left in the sun contains 50 times more microplastics in the water.
Even tea bags can release over 11 billion microplastics into a single cup.
Also try to avoid products like plastic Keurig or Nespresso pods and plastic cookware.
How to support your natural detox systems
Your liver, kidneys, gut, skin, and lungs can detox most plastics from your body, but they need the right tools.
Eat foods that activate detox pathways:
- Cruciferous veggies (broccoli, kale, cabbage)
- Garlic & onions
- Citrus fruits, berries, green tea, turmeric, ginger
- Flax & chia seeds for fiber and binding toxins
Key supplements to consider:
- Glutathione boosters: NAC, alpha-lipoic acid, selenium
- Milk thistle for liver support
- Probiotics to bind BPA and improve gut health
- Vitamin C, zinc, and B vitamins to support detox enzymes
Other powerful strategies:
- Sauna sweating – proven to release BPA through skin
- Stay hydrated – aim for half your body weight in ounces of clean water
- Eat fiber daily – 30–50g to “trap” and eliminate toxins via stool
- Exercise – supports lymphatic flow and detox through breath and sweat
Microplastics are slowly sabotaging our health, contributing to hormone imbalances, infertility, weight gain, chronic diseases, and even cognitive decline.
We can’t avoid microplastics completely, but we can reduce our exposure significantly, and your body will thank you for it.
Stay Healthy,
