Your body can’t heal when it thinks it’s in danger

You eat well, take your supplements, get rest… but something still feels off. Your digestion isn’t great, your energy dips, or maybe your recovery feels slower than it should.

Turns out, when your nervous system is stuck in survival mode, your body deliberately puts healing, digestion, and even hormone balance on the back burner.

Makes sense, right? If your body thinks you’re in danger it won’t waste energy on things like deep healing.

This was very useful when our ancestors were being chased by a lion.

But today, your body reacts the same way to everyday stresses, like rushing to meet a work deadline or scrolling through overwhelming news.

Getting your body to relax is key to breaking this cycle.

One thing I found super interesting is how the vagus nerve plays a role in switching the body from “fight or flight” to “rest and recover.”

Research suggests that simple things like: cold exposure, deep breathing, or even humming, can stimulate the vagus nerve and help nudge your body back into healing mode.

To implement this, you could try:

  • Ending your shower with 30 seconds of cold water.
  • Practicing deep breathing, focusing on slow, controlled exhales.
  • Humming or singing, according to this study, humming has been shown to reduce stress and enhance vagus nerve activity, promoting relaxation.

Something else that could help a lot is morning sunlight.

Research shows getting outside within an hour of waking helps set your body’s internal clock, ensuring cortisol is released at the right times.

This keeps your nervous system balanced, so you have energy when you need it and can wind down properly at night.

Plus, it reinforces a natural rhythm that keeps your body out of ‘survival mode,’ making recovery, digestion, and healing easier.
